Eating healthy is not complicated, boring or limiting. Eating for a healthy body requires putting some thought and effort into food choices. Simply stated, eating for a healthy body:
- Encourages a diet rich in grains, vegetables, fruits, lower-fat dairy products and lean meats, poultry and fish.
- Emphasizes the use of whole grains (brown rice, millet, pot barley, quinoa, rolled oats, whole wheat), legumes (dried peas, beans, soybean products and lentils) and controlled amounts of unsaturated fats (non-hydrogenated margarines, vegetables oils, nuts, seeds and flaxseed).
- Regularly includes meatless (vegetarian) meals and foods rich in colour (yellow corn, orange sweet potatoes, green broccoli, red grapes, purple cabbage).
- Views mealtime as an occasion to fuel the body with nutrients from a variety of foods.
- Considers “eating until just satisfied” an important guideline for avoiding excess weight gain.
- Discourages heavy reliance on foods that are high in saturated fats, cholesterol, salt and sugar.
- Supports the concept that food should be enjoyed and that “treats” can be included if choosen wisely within the context of a healthy diet.
