Oct 16 : Tax and Succession Issues Pertaining to Cottage Properties

The family cottage is an asset which couples struggle with as they complete their estate planning.  Cottages are associated with childhood and family memories, and there is strong desire that the cottage provide the same good sentiments to future generations. However, depending on the lifestyle and priorities of the members of those future generations, that may or may not make sense. In addition to the challenges of being “equal” among children with a unique family asset, there are also tax and probate considerations which should be taken into account. This presentation will discuss the issues and outline some possible strategies and options. There will also be time for questions.

Presented by: Florence Carey

Florence Carey is a lawyer who was called to the Manitoba bar in 2001. She is a partner at the law firm MLT Aikins LLP, where she practices in the area of taxation, including corporate and personal tax planning, incorporations, corporate reorganizations, advice and assistance to small business and farm business, and business succession and estate planning.
