Beginner's Guide to The Centre
I’ve purchased a membership … now what do I do
- Am I dressed appropriately?
- Where do I go?
- What do I do?
The Reh-Fit Centre is dedicated to building community wellness – by supporting and encouraging individuals, groups, and the larger community to enjoy and participate in regular, healthy, active living. You are among friends at the Reh-Fit where a community of individuals have discovered a sense of accomplishment and success in building a healthy lifestyle.
When you join the Reh-Fit you will receive a tour that will include:
- Locker rooms
- Fitness area – cardiovascular and weight training equipment
- Group fitness studios
- Members Café and lounge
What to wear:
- Comfortable layered clothing. As you burn calories while exercising your body temperature will increase and clothing that will allow some heat to escape is ideal.
- Comfortable, well fitting, fully enclosed footwear is a must. Most types of sport shoes will be appropriate.
What to bring
- A non-breakable water bottle will ensure you can remain hydrated during your workout. Water only is allowed in the Field House.
- If you plan on having a shower after your workout you will need to bring your own soap and shampoo.
- Annual towel service may be purchased. With this service, each time a member enters the building they receive two towels. Daily towel service is also available for a small fee or you may bring your own towel from home.
Arriving at the Centre
- The Reception Desk staff will greet you as you enter the front doors of the building and are available to answer any questions.
- You will need to swipe your membership card at the Reception Desk to allow access to the Centre. Swiping your card provides the Centre with crucial usage patterns to allow for adequate staffing, equipment purchases, and cleaning schedules.
Peak Times
- Hours when the fitness area is most busy is Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 – 11 am and 4 – 7 pm. This varies depending on the season.
Locker rooms
- Full and half-length lockers are available for daily use at no charge. Your Reh-Fit Centre membership card will act as a key to the lockers. Remember to take your card with you when you are leaving at the end of your work-out.
Track
- We have one of the longest tracks in the city. Walking or jogging on the track might be an option for your first few visits until you feel more comfortable trying out one of our cardiovascular machines. The track changes directions each day. Arrows on the side of the track indicate the direction.
Cardio Equipment (equipment used to increase heart rate i.e. treadmill, bike, elliptical)
- Most pieces of cardio equipment have a quick start option to make it easier to get started. Simply get on your chosen piece of equipment, start the motion then press the quick start button. From this point you can adjust resistance and speed as required.
- Equipment is available on a first-come, first-served basis. You will need to sign up for some cardiovascular equipment.
- When you finish, spray the fluid in the spray bottles on the paper towels provided and wipe off controls, seats and railings.
Resistance Equipment (weights)
- We strongly recommend that you sign up for one of our free weight training clinics offered several times a week. This one-hour clinic will help teach you proper technique, help you understand the principles of strength training and how to apply them to a safe and effective weight training routine. Class size is kept small for individual attention. You will come away with a program that you can easily incorporate into your exercise routine and an understanding of how to use the Centre’s equipment. Register at the Reception Desk.
Group Fitness
Group fitness classes are a great way to meet other members!
- All group fitness classes include a warm-up, cool down and exercise to promote strength, endurance, flexibility and balance. Everyone is encouraged to work at their own pace and options are provided to help you adjust the intensity.
- Let the instructor know that you are new so they can offer some good advice before the class or as it progresses.
- If you feel a little uncoordinated or out of place at your first class, then welcome to the club! It won’t take long. Most classes will follow a similar routine for a few weeks so you over time you will understand the basics and follow the class with ease.
- Try a number of classes to see where you get the most benefits and also what you enjoy!
