October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and we heard the experience of a Breast Cancer survivor and Reh-Fit member, Karen.
Karen was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in April of 2022.
After surgery in June of this year, Karen started radiation treatments in the fall, which she has now completed.
She found it difficult to tell people about her diagnosis at first but found comfort and support in doing so.
Karen was overwhelmed by the amount of support she received, especially from staff and members of the Reh-Fit Centre.
With the physical limitations she encountered, Karen considered putting her Reh-Fit membership on hold but decided to keep attending the Centre because the social interactions she experiences here are so important for a positive recovery both physically and mentally.
“I love the Reh-Fit. It is a community here and I really noticed that through this process,” said Karen.
She believes being fit and active at the Reh-Fit Centre benefited her recovery.
The resources available at the Centre helped Karen adapt to different ways of staying active with various levels of fitness classes and professional fitness staff.
“It was important to know that regardless of my limitations I could still come here because the Reh-Fit is my outlet,” she said.
The Reh-Fit has helped Karen stay positive throughout this experience and feel a lot better after talking about it with friends and family.
