The Reh-Fit Centre and Foundation have elected their Boards of Directors for the 2021/22 year. We would like to welcome new Directors Linda Nugent, Ian Fish, and Bonnie Siemens. We would also like to extend a warm welcome to our new Committee members.

2021/22 Reh-Fit Board of Directors

JOHN SCHUBERT, CHAIR

John Schubert was formerly President of McCaine Electric Ltd., a leading Winnipeg-based electrical contractor providing electrical installation, maintenance, and related services to clients in the industrial, institutional, and commercial markets. Contracts have ranged from Ronald McDonald House to the Winnipeg Blue Bomber stadium.

A construction industry veteran, John has over 30 years of experience acting as council for industry-related boards and associations, such as the Manitoba Institute of Trades and Technology, which provides both secondary and post-secondary skills training, and the Canadian Construction Association, which seeks to build Canada with ethics, skills, and responsibility.

John studied at the University of Manitoba, where he received his BA in Economics & Political Science in 1974, and in 1976 he completed an MBA in Finance. He has been a Gold Seal Certified Project Manager since 2005.

His achievements include Volunteer of the Year, Winnipeg Construction Association, and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, which honours significant contributions and achievements by Canadians.

PAT KLOEPFER, PAST CHAIR

Pat is Chief Compliance Officer at KAI Asset Management Inc., a Winnipeg-based portfolio management firm helping individual investors manage their wealth. Over her career, Pat gained expertise in securities industry regulatory and compliance through over 25 years’ experience at Investors Group in various functions, including compliance, internal audit, finance, and operations. Most recently, she worked as an independent consultant to mutual fund industry firms and regulators.

Pat earned her Chartered Accountant designation while working in public practice with KPMG, and holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Hons.) degree from the University of Manitoba.

Pat has been an active member of the Reh-Fit Centre for many years and has enjoyed both the programs offered by the Centre, and the friendships that have developed in the process. She is a firm believer in the benefits of an active lifestyle, and enjoys cycling, pilates, yoga, and gardening.

JUDY MURPHY, VICE-CHAIR

Judy possesses a unique combination of CEO, board, teaching and consulting experience. She has held leadership positions at the Winnipeg Art Gallery, Folklorama, Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet and Safety Services Manitoba. She provides services in strategic planning, board governance, and executive and team coaching to clients through Murphy’s Executive Leadership.

Judy instructs Organizational Behaviour for the University of Winnipeg and various courses for the Certified Management Consultants of Canada.

Judy’s board experience includes the Manitoba Centennial Centre Corporation, the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce, the Manitoba Chamber of Commerce and the Crown Corporations Council of Manitoba. In addition, Judy is a member of the Quality and Vigilance Community at St. Boniface Hospital and an external member of the Finance and Audit Committee at Doctors Manitoba.

Judy is a graduate of the University of Manitoba. She holds an FCPA, FCA, a Masters Certificate in coaching from Royal Roads University (CEC) and is an accredited team coach. She also holds the designations of Chartered Professional in Human Resources (CPHR) and Certified Management Consultant (CMC).

Judy is committed to good health and well-being and exercises at the Reh-Fit five days a week. She is grateful to Reh-Fit for the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program and the role that the staff played and continues to play in her husband’s remarkable recovery.

Judy has been a member of the Reh-Fit since August 2015 and is Chair of the Governance and Nominating Committee.

CHUCK STEELE, TREASURER

Chuck has a Master of Business Administration degree and is registered as both, a Professional Engineer (P. Eng.) and a Professional Accountant (CPA, CMA) in the province of Manitoba. Throughout his 22 year career at Manitoba Hydro, he has held a number of senior management roles including a period where he was acting Vice-President, responsible for Distribution Engineering, Construction and Operations. He is currently the Director of Safety, Health & Environment.

Chuck is a strong proponent of healthy and active living. He and his wife Ella have two sons and since 1996, he has been involved in his local community centre coaching the various sports that his sons participated in.

Chuck first became a member of the Reh-Fit Centre in 2008 participating in the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program and is currently Treasurer and Chair of the Finance Committee.

IRENE HAMILTON, SECRETARY

Irene Hamilton has been a member of the Reh-Fit Centre since June 2017 following her retirement from the Provincial Government where she held several senior executive positions, including Assistant Deputy Attorney General, Public Trustee, and Ombudsman.

Graduating from University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Laws in 1979, Irene was called to the Bar in 1980 and, in retirement, continues her association with the legal profession by having served as President of the Law Society and serving as a member of a number of committees.

She has acted as a member of the Investment Committee, chaired committees including Admissions and Education, Discipline, and Finance. She is currently a panel member of the Public Utilities Board of Manitoba, a Board Member of the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba, and has been Chair of the boards of United Way of Winnipeg and Manitoba Theatre for Young People.

Irene has been awarded the Richard J. Scot Award for Excellence in Promoting the Rule of Law and the Manitoba Bar Association Community Service Award.

IAN FISH, DIRECTOR

Ian joined Manitoba Hydro in September 2020 as Vice-President of Digital & Transformation. His expertise is critical as we look at new technologies and practices to help support our more customer-centric vision of Manitoba Hydro.

Prior to joining Manitoba Hydro, Ian was a Partner at IBM Canada’s Canadian Health practice in Winnipeg. Previously, he was the Managing Principal for Western Canada for Telus Health in Vancouver and served in senior roles at Accenture in Toronto, Manitoba eHealth, and Health Sciences Centre here in Winnipeg.

Ian holds a Bachelor of Arts and Master's in Science from the University of Manitoba.

In addition to his executive career, Ian is a Director on the TechNation (formerly Information Technology Association of Canada) Health Board. He is also a former board member of the Manitoba Lung Association. Ian has a passion for fitness and has been a member of Reh-Fit since 2019.

MIKE HICKS, DIRECTOR

Mike is General Counsel and Vice-President of Business Development of InfoTech Inc., a Winnipeg-based provider of health and wellness services to Canadian and international clients.

Mike’s recent background includes senior management roles in two Canadian-based retail businesses with significant international operations, and prior to that Mike practiced Corporate and Commercial law with a mergers and acquisitions/technology focus at leading Winnipeg and Toronto law firms.

Mike has been a member of the Reh-Fit Centre since 2008 and was elected to the Board of Directors in 2014.

LINDA HOROSKO, DIRECTOR

Linda Horosko is an information technology professional with nearly 40 years of experience. She retired from Great-West Life as Vice-President, Information Services after 19 years with the company in various information technology management roles in Canada and as Acting CIO, Canada Life - Europe. Prior to joining Great-West Life, Linda spent 20 plus years with the Governments of Manitoba and Saskatchewan in various professional and management roles. She has a BSc (Honours) in Computer Science from the University of Saskatchewan.

Outside of work, Linda enjoys gardening, reading, traveling, researching her family history and genealogy and participating on various committees and ministries in her church. Linda and her husband Andrew have two sons and a daughter.

Linda has been a member of Reh-Fit since 2013. She was elected to the Board of Directors in 2018 and also serves on the Governance and Nominating Committee.

LINDA NUGENT, DIRECTOR

Linda graduated from the University of Manitoba, Faculty of Medicine, in 1974 and then received further training in emergency medicine and anesthesia. She subsequently became Medical Director of the Winnipeg Ambulance Department, where she developed advanced care paramedic protocols for pre-hospital treatment of patients. An extensive review of 911 calls in Winnipeg showed that immediate pre-hospital treatment delivered by advanced care paramedics could save the lives of many critically ill patients in Winnipeg. That pre-hospital system, with both firefighter and paramedic response, continues to this day.

Accreditation of the advanced care paramedic program required that Linda, as Medical Director, ride with paramedics in ambulances to assess the quality of pre-hospital care in Winnipeg. After seeing firsthand the living conditions and poverty within Winnipeg, Linda became involved with the United Way of Winnipeg. She was Campaign Chair of the 1998 United Way Winnipeg campaign, which raised $10.5 million dollars in support of the many United Way agencies helping those in need in our city.

Linda’s parents were founding members of the Reh-Fit Centre and she still wears her Reh-Fit shoe tag from those early days when she accompanied her parents to Reh-Fit!

NICK RIEDIGER, DIRECTOR

Nicholas is a Red Seal Carpenter and works for PCL Constructors. He is currently working towards his Gold Seal Certification. His volunteer experience includes work with Sister MacNamara Preschool and Infant Daycare.

Nick has a passion for being active and visits the Centre frequently. He has been a member since 2013.

BETTY LOU ROCK, DIRECTOR

Betty Lou Rock is a registered nurse and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from the University of Manitoba and a Master’s Degree in Nursing from the University of Calgary.

Betty Lou has worked in health care in Winnipeg for 40 plus years in the areas of cardiac care, critical care, and emergency medical services, holding many clinical and administrative positions over the years. Betty Lou In recent years, helped to establish the STARS air ambulance service in Manitoba.

Now retired, Betty Lou remains an active member of the Association of Regulated Nurses of Manitoba and serves on their finance committee.

Betty Lou has been a member at Reh-Fit for several years and believes strongly in the values and activities of the Centre. She enjoys regular workouts, yoga, and coffee time with other members. She is currently a member of the Governance and Nominating Committee.

PETER WITHOOS, DIRECTOR

Peter Withoos has been a member of the Reh-Fit Centre for 24 years. Recently retired from a 43-year career in the construction industry, Peter has board experience with the Winnipeg Construction Association and the Canadian Construction Association.

Peter spent most of his career as Chief Estimator for several large construction companies and, in the latter years, was a Principle of M.D. Steele Construction where he was responsible for overall management including cost control, project management, safety, estimating, accounting, human resources, and bonding.

Board experience acquired by Peter has included acting as Chairman of the Winnipeg Construction Association where he also chaired the Bylaw Review Committee and Nominating Committee. He served the Canadian Construction Association as Provincial Vice-Chair and Director at Large.

In 2017, Peter was awarded an Honorary Life Membership in the Winnipeg Construction Association in recognition of his exemplary and outstanding service to the Association.

RHONDA CAIRNS, DIRECTOR APPOINTED BY THE ST. BONIFACE HOSPITAL

Rhonda is currently the Executive Director Clinical Programs and Chief Nursing Officer at St. Boniface Hospital. Rhonda oversees nursing practice in addition to the orientation and ongoing development of staff at St. Boniface Hospital. Rhonda has a degree in nursing and is currently completing a Masters of Arts Degree in Healthcare Leadership at Royal Roads University.

Cardiac and intensive care nursing has been the focus of her career spanning over 30 years in which she has held leadership roles in the areas of cardiac surgery, intensive care, and nursing education. Seeing firsthand the devastating effects of unhealthy eating and lack of physical activity, Rhonda is committed to the education and promotion of a healthy and active lifestyle for all ages.

Rhonda was appointed to the Board as a representative of the St. Boniface Hospital in June 2018.

 

2021/22 Reh-Fit Foundation Board of Directors

DEEPAK JOSHI, CHAIR

Deepak Joshi has held various management positions in Property and Information Systems, Development and Inspections, Planning Property and Development, Chief Operating Officer and Acting Chief Administrative Officer. In his 27+ year career with the City of Winnipeg, he provided operational leadership across the entire spectrum of civic business, and in the management of each City service, on a daily basis. Prior to joining the City of Winnipeg in 1987, Deepak owned and operated a private consulting company in the Information Technology field which provided services to both the private and the public sector in change management, systems development, training, and provision of e-government services.

Deepak has represented the City of Winnipeg on the Forks North Portage Board and was the co-chair for the Civic Employee Benefits Board.

Deepak has been a member of the Reh-Fit since 2010.

KEVIN MCCULLOCH, VICE-CHAIR

Kevin McCulloch is a retired lawyer. He earned his B.A and L.L.B. degrees from the University of Manitoba and was called to the Bar in 1970. After twelve years in private practice Kevin joined the legal department of Manitoba Public Insurance, focusing on civil litigation. In 1994 he was appointed General Counsel, Vice President Legal and Corporate Secretary, Executive positions he held until his retirement from MPI in 2009.

In 2009 Kevin was elected to the Misericordia Health Centre Board of Directors. He served as Board Chair from 2012 to 2015 and currently serves as Past Chair of the MHC Board. He is a member of the Governance and Audit & Finance committees of the Board.

Kevin joined the Reh-Fit Centre in 2009 and remains an active member when not on the golf course.

GARY PACHAL, TREASURER

Gary Pachal graduated from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Commerce (Hons). He started his career at KPMG and became a Chartered Accountant during this time. In 2005, he accepted a position at CanWest Global Communications and in 2009 joined Investors Group. Gary has been involved in the community serving as treasurer at Share Our Strength Canada and the RH Foundation.

Gary has been a member of the Reh-Fit since 2005 and was elected to the Foundation Board in June 2014. He is currently the Chair of the Finance and Investment Committee.

JOANNA KNOWLTON, SECRETARY

Joanna graduated from The University of Manitoba with Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws degrees. She spent most of her career working in various capacities for The Public Trustee of Manitoba, retiring in 2014 as Public Trustee. During her career, Joanna has served on various boards and committees, including the Deer Lodge Centre Board of Directors, the Deer Lodge Centre Ethics Committee, The Alzheimer's Society Board of Directors and the Vital Statistics Special Operating Agency Advisory Board. She is currently a member of the College of Registered Nurses Discipline Committee and The Vulnerable Persons Living with a Mental Disability Hearing Panel Roster.

Since her retirement, Joanna has become an enthusiastic and committed Reh-Fit Centre member as of 2009. Joanna is currently Chair of the Planned Giving Committee, is a member of the Nominating and Governance Committee, and is the Secretary of the Board of Directors.

SUSAN BOULTER, DIRECTOR

In her 35 year career with the Province of Manitoba, Susan Boulter served as Director of Driver and Vehicle Licensing, Chief Operating Officer of Materials Distribution Agency and lastly as Chief Operating Officer of Vital Statistics Agency. She has sat on and chaired many provincial and national organizations.

Susan has been an active volunteer since her early teens. She was a member of the Junior League, on the vestry of All Saints’ Anglican Church, and was an active volunteer at Saint Mary’s Academy. Most recently, Susan has been on the Board of CancerCare Manitoba and chaired its Planning Committee.

Since the Reh-Fit was such a critical part of her parents’ and brother’s recoveries after their heart attacks, she is grateful for the opportunity to give back to the Centre. Susan is proud that her father was a founder of the Reh-Fit, and is committed to continuing her family contribution to the Centre through work with the Reh-Fit Foundation Board. She was Chair of the Reh-Fit Foundation Board of Directors from 2016 to 2019. She currently serves on the Planned Giving Committee.

BARRY BROWN, DIRECTOR

Barry Brown is President of Maple Leaf Construction based in Winnipeg. During his years working in the heavy construction and road building industry, he has served on numerous boards and chaired a number of local, national, and international construction associations, including serving as Chair of the Confederation of International Contractors Board of Directors.

Barry graduated from the University of Manitoba with a B.Sc. Civil Engineering in 1974. He is married with two children and two grandchildren, and when time permits, he enjoys a number of hobbies including golf, boating, and woodworking.

Barry has been a member of the Reh-Fit since 1982 and was elected to the Reh-Fit Foundation Board of Directors in 2011.

KRISTY KRAHN, DIRECTOR

Kristy graduated from the Asper School of Business, at the University of Manitoba, with a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) degree. She is the Director of Finance and Human Resources at The Quark Group, one of the largest privately owned retail footwear chains in Western Canada, currently operating 36 stores in the region.

Passionate about serving others, Kristy has volunteered at a variety of organizations over the years both personally and professionally. She is a regular volunteer at and with Church of the Rock, has been recently involved with the Heart & Stroke Foundation and enjoys serving at Siloam Mission.

Kristy considers the pursuit of health and wellness a priority and has been a member of the Reh-Fit Centre since 2007. Kristy currently serves on the Nominating and Governance Committee of the Foundation.

KENT MAGARRELL, DIRECTOR

Kent is a Financial Advisor and the owner of Winnipeg Financial Services - a wealth advisory and investment practice affiliated with Manulife Financial. He is active, in various capacities, with the Rotary Club of St. Boniface – St. Vital and Westworth United Church, where he is currently Chair of the Board of Trustees. Kent has been involved in a number of organizations over the years in leadership roles.

Kent was raised on a farm near Domain, Manitoba and is an alumnus of the University of Manitoba with a B.Sc.A and a M.Sc. – both in Agricultural Economics.

Kent has been a member of the Reh-Fit Centre since 2006 and is one of the early morning regulars. He currently serves on the Planned Giving Committee. He is married with three children and two grandchildren. Interests include family, work, travel, and spending time at their Falcon Lake cottage.

BRUCE MAZUR, DIRECTOR

Bruce Mazur was formerly Senior Vice President with Aon Risk Services based in Winnipeg. Bruce joined Aon (Reed Stenhouse) after graduating from University of Manitoba - Political Science. Over his 34 year career with Aon, he held roles as an Account Executive on Large /Global Risks and serving in Sales & Service Leadership responsibilities for Western Canada.

Bruce is married with two children and when not involved with the family enjoys his time as a member of Southwood Golf & Country Club.

He has been a member of the Reh-Fit Centre since 2012 and is a member of the Centre’s Finance Committee.

BONNIE SIEMENS, DIRECTOR

Bonnie is a semi-retired Chartered Financial Planner, specializing in insurance and risk planning. She has extensive experience and knowledge, having been in the insurance and investment field for many years, and has attained several industry designations. Her strong belief in women needing to understand finances results in her continuing to guide women in protecting against financial risk.

She has served in senior board roles on the Estate Planning Council of Winnipeg, Vice-President of the Provincial Council of Women, a member of Advocis, and the NCWC and Insurance Council of Manitoba and was involved for many years with the Business and Professional Women of Winnipeg. Bonnie has fundraising experience in the community, serving as fundraising chair of the Celebrating Women Gala in 2018 and 2019.

Bonnie has been a member of Reh-Fit since 2009. She serves on the Planned Giving Committee of the Foundation.

NEIL TRENHOLM, DIRECTOR

Neil Trenholm is a General Counsel with the Legal Services Branch of the Manitoba Department of Justice. Before joining the civil service, Neil was a partner in the Winnipeg law firm Thompson Dorfman Sweatman. In addition to his law degree, he has a B.Comm (Hons). At work, Neil is a member of the Aboriginal and Resource Law team where he provides advice and counsel to a wide-range of clients on a variety of issues with a specific focus on commercial matters.

Neil was a member of the Reh-Fit in its infancy. He returned to the Reh-Fit with his teenage son more than 5 years ago. Shortly after that, his wife Joy and their daughter joined them as members. While their children are no longer at home, both Neil and Joy attend regularly and believe that the Reh-Fit contributes greatly to their physical and mental well-being. They expect to be members well into their 90s.

Neil served on the board of the Manitoba Marathon for several years including a term as chair. He has also acted as a Learning Group Facilitator for The Law Society of Manitoba in its Continuing Professional Legal Education program.
